If you’re anything like me you were super excited for fall, created a ton of content for your Instagram, posted about as much as you could, and forgot to get anything ready for this winter.

So what, right? Just post some photos from last year. Well, my problem is that I spent time last year in Costa Rica. So my dilemma of no snow-covered trees or cold winter colors to garnish my feed this holiday season has officially begun. I also don't like to recycle too much content because it forces me to get out and create more. For all of you out there having the same problem as me, (and I know I’m not alone) I’m giving you a few ideas to run with as the days grow shorter and the snow begins to fall.

1. Pictures of nature all decked out in white.

This is classic. It’s fun to do, and it makes you realize how nice it is to be outside enjoying the fresh air even when it’s below freezing. Problem is who knows when it’s going to snow? You might be waiting until well past Christmas. My advice is to scout out locations beforehand and have a shot list planned out so you can get right to it when you wake up to a world of white.

2. Pictures of endless mugs of hot chocolate/tea

These kinds of photos are my favorite. You get to express yourself even if it’s that subtle “wanderlust” mug you’re using or the Sackcloth & Ashes blanket draped over your feet. These photos can be all about you. It also gives you an excuse to drink copious amounts of hot chocolate until spring. If someone asks say, “it’s for a photo” they’ll understand, right? But seriously add dimension to these photos. Get your fuzzy socks in the shot, that book you’ve been trying to read since last year, and knit sweater sleeves, lots and lots of cozy knit sweater sleeves.

3. Pictures of friends or yourself modeling outdoors

Just because it’s cold it doesn’t mean you can’t go out and have a fun photoshoot. Find someone who enjoys photographing as much as you do or even someone who will willing model with you and get outside. Winter shoots can be even more fun because you get to dress all cute and cozy because of the cold. If there’s no snow yet try new things. Take close face shots focusing on eyes. Bring that wicked cute beanie from Eddie Bauer and get creative. If you finally have snow get some classic throwing snow up in the air shots, then transition to more motion. Bring a blanket and spin around in it. Laugh up at the sky with mittens. I’m sure you all have a few photos pinned to your Pinterest boards start there for some inspiration.

It might sound weird at first, but grab a ton of pine cones, some pine branches and set up. I suggest using a dark wooden surface to lay everything on. Arrange your objects, maybe add some red berries, and hey you can even sprinkle everything with some powdered sugar for that ‘snow’ effect. The textures will look good in your feed and it’s another opportunity to get creative with your set up. Plus it will make the house smell like Christmas!

5. Finally…lights!

Try to incorporate lights into as many photos as you can. Your tones don’t have to all be cold, blue, and grey this season. Mix it up with some warmer tones and moods. You can order string lights off of Amazon for cheap and then you can wrap anything up. Have your models play with them, place them in those hot chocolate shots, make hearts in the snow with them just as night is falling. The possibilities are endless. And when you’re done with them you can string them onto your Christmas tree.

Well, I hope this helps a bit. I know I was feeling a bit sad that I wasn’t taking any crazy trips this winter. But now I am hopeful that while my photos won’t be of me standing on the edge of a cliff overlooking Lake Louise they will at least be fun, creative, and not recycled.

Happy Holidays Everyone!
